Greater San Diego SPORTS Festival August 2nd at Tierrasanta Park
& Recreation Center
Everyone
is invited to join in the fun at the Greater San Diego SPORTS Festival
on Saturday, August 2nd at Tierrasanta Park & Recreation Center
(11220 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego 92124). The 16 S4EA sports
will be featured at the SPORTS Festival including basketball, bowling,
bocce, cycling, figure & speed skating, flag football, floor hockey,
golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball
& walking. Breakfast & lunch are provided by the Loyal Order of
Moose, Mission Lions & Tierrasanta Kiwanis Club.
Athletes
with developmental disabilities, families, friends, coaches, volunteers,
supporters, and others in the community are invited to play in our
Greater San Diego SPORTS Festival. Join in the fun & games! Play
as many sports as you want. There is no cost to registered S4EA

'A
Taste 4 SPORTS' Gala Fundraiser August 14 at Top of the Park
SPORTS
for Exceptional Athletes will be hosting our first gala fundraising
event on August 14th from 6-10pm at Top of the Park (an unforgettable
view of Balboa Park and downtown San Diego), atop the Historic Park
Manor Suites Hotel (525 Spruce St., San Diego 92103). Map
it! 'A Taste 4 SPORTS' will feature food from some of San Diego's
tasty local restaurants, appearances by notable local and sports
figures, entertainment, and a fabulous silent & live auction. Reservations

Athlete Council Activities
The
S4EA Dance/Karaoke Night, held on Saturday, July 19th from 6-9pm
at the War Memorial Building (3325 Zoo Drive, San Diego 92101),
is co-sponsored by San Diego Park & Recreation-Therapeutic Recreation
Services. Registration is $5.00 which includes snacks. Pictures
are an additional $2.00. The S4EA Athlete Council meets from 5-6pm
before the Dance/Karaoke Night on July 19th.
Other
upcoming S4EA Athlete Council activities include: SPORTS Festival
at Tierrasanta Park & Rec. Center on August 2nd, Jani Tyler's Halloween
Party on October 18th, SPORTS Carnival in November, Holiday Party
in December & Valentine Dance with SMSC in February.
Thank
you to 215 S4EA athletes/coaches/supporters for volunteering 386
shifts at the US Open Golf Tournament June 9-15th at Torrey Pines
which raised $18,578.18 for the S4EA programs. Our Food Court was
by the 17th green so we got to see Tiger on his way to his win.

Bocce
The
summer bocce league is held at the Morley Field Bocce Courts (2221
Morley Field Dr. near Texas & Upas St., San Diego 92104) on Wednesdays
from 5:30-7pm. Bocce teams have been formed and compete in league
play every week.
The
S4EA Bocce Tournament will be held on Sunday, October 5th at La
Jolla Country Day School (9490 Genesee Ave., La Jolla 92037).

Bowling
The
Fall S4EA Bowling program is getting ready to roll. Bowling practices
are scheduled every Monday from 3:30-5:30pm at the Kearny Mesa Bowl
(7585 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego 92117) starting August 4th.
A bowling
league will be held every Saturday starting September 6th from 9-11am
at the Brunswick Premier Lanes (845 Lazo Court, Chula Vista 91910).
The
S4EA Bowling Tournament is scheduled for December 7th at the 32nd
St. Naval Station (Norman Scott Rd. & Vesta St., SD 92136).

Cycling
The
cyclists ride on Saturdays from 1:15-3:30pm as follows: August 2nd
SPORTS Festival at Tierrasanta Park, August 9th Around the Bay (Spanish
Landing-35 mile ride-bring ferry money-12:30-4:30pm), August 16th
Coronado (Tidelands Park-parking lot near the Bay), August 23rd
De Anza to UCSD (De Anza Cove parking lot north end-includes a fairly
strenuous hill up Gilman Dr.), August 30th Imperial Beach (J Street
Pier parking lot). Athletes, parents, and coaches are encouraged
to join the rides.

rides are posted on the S4EA website www.s4ea.org or call head coach
Russ Buckley at 619-469-1812 for more information on the cycling
program.

Flag Football
The
Fall S4EA Flag Football program is held at Colina Del Sol Park (5319
Orange Ave., San Diego 92115) on Tuesdays from 5:30-8pm from August
5th to September 2nd. Flag Football will then switch to Monday nights
from September 8th to October 6th at Colina Del Sol Park (5319 Orange
Ave., San Diego 92115) from 5:30-7pm.
The
S4EA Flag Football Tournament will be held on Sunday, October 5th
at La Jolla Country Day School (9490 Genesee Ave, La Jolla ).
S4EA
athletes will be attending on Sunday, October 12th the LET ME SAIL
Flag Football Tournament in Santa Clarita.

Golf
S4EA
Golfers practice ever Sunday from 1:00-2:30pm at the following locations:
Sheraton
4 Points (8110 Aero Drive, San Diego 92123) on the 1st, 3rd, and
4th Sunday of each month.
Stadium
Golf Center (2990 Murphy Canyon Road, San Diego 92123) on the 2nd
Sunday of each month.
Sail
Ho Golf Course (2960 Truxton Road, San Diego 92106) for advanced
golfers on the 3rd and 4th Sunday of each month.

Ice Skating
The
S4EA Ice Skating program consists of figure skating and speed skating.
The Scripps Ranch Ice Skating practices are held every Wednesday
from 3-5pm at the San Diego Ice Arena (11048 Ice Skate Place, San
Diego 92126) and every Thursday from 3:30-5pm at the University
Towne Center (4545 La Jolla Village Dr., San Diego 92122).

Soccer
The
summer soccer league is held at The Salvation Army Kroc Center (6845
University Ave., San Diego 92115) on Mondays from 6-8pm. Soccer
teams have been formed and compete in league play every week.
Over
20 S4EA soccer athletes had fun at the San Diego Charity Cup on
June 22nd at Mar Vista High School with 100 Club soccer teams. Thank
you Ralf Wilhelms and Anthony Farace (former San Diego Sockers)
for including S4EA.
The
S4EA Soccer Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, August 23rd from
9am-5pm at 32nd Street Naval Station (Division & Ravenscroft., San
Diego).

Softball
The

practices are held every Wednesday from 7-8:15pm and Saturday from
10:30am-11:30am at the La Mesa Pool (5100 Memorial Dr., La Mesa
91941).

Tennis
practices are held every Monday from 6:30-8pm at Barnes Tennis Center
(4490 W. Point Loma Blvd., SD 92106). No tennis practice on August
4th & 18th.

from 9am-3pm at 32nd Street Naval Station (Division & Ravenscroft,
San Diego).

Walking Club
The
Walking Club at Lake Murray (near Lake Murray Blvd. & Baltimore
Dr. on Kiowa Dr., La Mesa 91942) meets every Monday and Thursday
from 5-6pm. Meet at the main parking lot. For more information in

To Register In S4EA
If
you are interested in becoming an athlete in SPORTS for Exceptional
Athletes, please call the S4EA Office at 858-565-7432 and we will
mail you a Registration Packet. You can also download registration
information directly from the SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes website
at www.s4ea.org.
SPORTS
for Exceptional Athletes (S4EA) is a sports program serving athletes
with developmental disabilities ages 5 through adult in San Diego
County. In team sports, teams may be made up of athletes with developmental
disabilities, families, friends, and others in the community who
want to play on inclusive teams.
S4EA
Needs Your Help
SPORTS
for Exceptional Athletes is a volunteer-based community-wide program
that needs your help:
- To
serve as coach, event organizer, fundraiser, sports official,
or other worker.
- To
provide sports facilities, equipment, meals, and other in-kind
services.
- To
provide operating funds for the SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes
program here in San Diego County. SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes
is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization (ID # 20-8886536). Contributions
are tax deductible as allowed by law.
- To
donate a vehicle to S4EA, call toll free 877-537-5277; free pick-up;
tax receipt provided; and no smog certificate required.
Volunteers
are needed as coaches for the Summer & Fall Sports Season in bocce,
bowling, cycling, flag football, golf, ice skating, soccer, softball,
swimming, tennis, and walking. You do not need any prior experience
in the sport or working with persons with developmental disabilities,
just a desire to help. Head coaches run the practices, while assistant
coaches help the athletes under the direction of the head coach
in teaching the athletes various sports skills. Volunteers also
act as scorekeepers and timers in the team sports. Coaches spend
2-3 hours weekly for a 3 month period. Call S4EA Office at 858-565-7432
to get involved.
