S4EA Floor Hockey Tournament June 1st at SDSU Concludes Spring Sports Season

The S4EA Spring Floor Hockey Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 1st from 9am-5pm at SDSU Aztec Recreation Center with the Imperial Beach Kiwanis providing the lunch. This concludes the Spring Sports Season. Floor hockey teams practice through the end of May in preparation for the floor hockey tournament as follows:

Floor hockey league play takes place Mondays at Mid-City Gym (4302 Landis St., San Diego 92105) from 5:30-8pm ending May 20th.

Juniors ages 5-18 practice floor hockey Thu at Kearny Mesa Rec. Ctr. (3170 Armstrong, SD) from 4-5:15pm ending May 30-not May 23.

South Bay practices floor hockey on Mon from 6-7:30pm at the Boys/Girls Clubs of Chula Vista (1301 Oleander, CV 91911) end May 20.

East County practices floor hockey on Thu from 6-7:30pm at the Bostonia Recreation Ctr. (1049 Bostonia, El Cajon 92021) end May 30.

The baseball season finishes with Dodgers vs Cubs/Royals on June 1 & Cubs vs Royals on June 8 with both games at Balboa at 10am.

S4EA Swim Meet June 22nd at SMSC Starts Summer Sports Season Jani Tyler & Walter Jackson at SPORTS Festival

The summer S4EA Swimming Meets are scheduled on Saturday June 22nd and Saturday, August 10th from 8am-1pm at St. Madeleine Sophie's Center (2119 E. Madison Ave, El Cajon 92019). Thank you to SMSC for hosting the Swim Meets & providing their staff.

Sharks swim practices (swimmers only) are Fridays from 3:30-5pm at the Copley YMCA (3901 Landis St., San Diego 92105).

South Bay Belugas swim practices are switching back to Thursdays from 6:30-7:15pm for non-swimmers and 7:15-8pm for swimmers at Border View YMCA (3601 Arey Dr., San Diego 92154) starting May 16th.

Dolphins swim practices are held Saturdays from 10:30-11:30am at La Mesa Pool (5100 Memorial Dr., La Mesa) starting June 15th.

Windansea is hosting a "Day at the Beach" on Sat. July 20th to learn surfing. Contact Scot Cherry at 858-705-7170 for more information.

SPORTS Camp July 12-14 at Wildwood Ranch in Ramona

Athletes can sign-up for SPORTS Camp Session #2 to be held July 12-14 at Wildwood Ranch in Ramona which will offer a general program of camp & sports activities and can accommodate athletes in wheelchairs. Athletes spend 2 nights in cabins and eat 6 camp meals under the guidance of camp counselors/chaperones. Persons with developmental disabilities, families, friends, volunteers, coaches, and supporters are all welcome to join SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes at the SPORTS Camp.

The SPORTS Camp Registration Fee is $150 per session to help pay for lodging, meals, insurance, patch, supplies, etc. Mail Fee and SPORTS Camp Registration Form as soon as possible to SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes (9575 Aero Drive #B, San Diego, CA 92123). A deposit of $50 will reserve your spot in the SPORTS Camp. S4EA is in need of Camp Counselors to chaperone the athletes at SPORTS Camp. 2013 SPORTS Camps - Camp Counselors/Chaperones Still Needed!

S4EA is still in need of Camp Counselors to chaperone the athletes at SPORTS Camp. 150 campers are expected at Session #2 from July 12-14 at Wildwood Ranch in Ramona, so we want at least 50 camp counselors/chaperones. Coaches, volunteers, families, friends & other supporters are welcome to chaperone. Experienced volunteers will be the head chaperones. The assistant chaperones do not need any experience, just a desire to help. For more info or to chaperone, call (858)565-7432.

S4EA Summer Season

S4EA Bocce

The summer bocce league will be held at the Morley Field Bocce Courts (2221 Morley Field Dr., near Texas & Upas St., SD 92104) on Tuesdays from 5:30-7pm starting July 9th. The first few weeks are bocce practices and then athletes form teams for league competition.

North County bocce practices at Brengle Terrace Park (1200 Vale Terrace Dr., Vista 92084) on Thursdays from 5:30-7pm starting June 13.

South Bay bocce practices at Chula Vista Elks Lodge (901 Elks Lane, CV 91910) on Wednesdays from 5:30-7pm starting July 10th.

S4EA Bowling

Bowling practices are held every Monday from 3:30-5:30pm at the Kearny Mesa Bowl (7585 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego 92111) starting July 1.

Poway bowling practices are held on Saturdays from 1:30-3:30pm at Poway Fun Bowl (12941 Poway Rd., Poway 92064).

S4EA Cycling

The cyclists ride on Saturdays from 1:15-3:30pm as follows: June 1st at Chula Vista Marina to Imperial Beach, June 8th at Robb Field (Bacon St. parking lot-challenging ride), June 15th at Spanish Landing to Coronado (1:15-4:15pm, $7 ferry), June 22 at Lake Murray around the lake (+ practice starts).

The Friends of Torrance Exceptional Athletes (FTEA) Cycling Meet is scheduled for Sunday, June 30th at the Encino Velodrome.

The S4EA Cycling Tournament is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, August 25th at the San Diego Velodrome in Balboa Park.

S4EA Golf

Golfers practice once a week on Saturdays from 2:30-4pm at the following locations: Stadium Golf Center (2990 Murphy Canyon Road, SD 92123) on the 1st & 2nd Sat of each month & Sheraton 4 Points (8110 Aero Drive, SD 92123) on the 3rd & 4th Sat of each month.

The S4EA Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, August 25th from 9am-3pm at the Balboa Park Golf Course.

S4EA Ice Skating

North County has a new Ice Skating program at Iceoplex (555 N. Tulip St., Escondido 92025) on Mondays from 3-4pm.

S4EA Soccer

The summer soccer league is scheduled at The Salvation Army Kroc Center (6845 University Ave. San Diego 92115) on Mondays from 6-8pm starting June 17th. The first few weeks will be soccer practices and then athletes form teams for league competition.

South Bay soccer is held Mondays from 6:30-7:30pm at Valle Lindo Elementary (1515 Oleander Ave., CV 91911) starting June 10th.

The S4EA Soccer Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, August 25th from 9am-5pm at Morley Field in Balboa Park.

S4EA Softball

The summer softball league will be temporarily held at Colina Del Sol Park (5319 Orange Ave., San Diego 92115) on Wednesdays from 5:30-8:00pm starting June 26th while the softball fields at Morley Field are closed for field renovation. When the Morley Field Softball Fields open in August, we will continue softball on Wednesdays from 5:30-8:00pm at the Morley Field Softball Fields (2221 Morley Field Dr. near Texas & Upas St., San Diego 92104). The first few weeks will be softball practices and then athletes will form teams for league competition.

North San Diego softball practices are Sundays from 3:30-5:30pm at Buena Vista Ballfields (1851 S. Melrose, Vista 92081) starting June 16 (tentative).

South Bay softball is held Mondays from 5:30-6:30pm at Valle Lindo Elementary (1515 Oleander Ave., CV 91911) starting June 10th.

The S4EA Softball Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, September 8th from 9am-5pm at Morley Field in Balboa Park.

S4EA Tennis

Tennis practices are held Mondays from 6:30-8pm at Barnes Tennis Center (4490 W. Point Loma Blvd., SD 92106) starting June 3rd.

The S4EA Tennis Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, September 8th from 9am-3pm at Morley Field in Balboa Park.

S4EA Board of Directors Election Results

The following people were elected to 3 year terms to the S4EA Board of Directors at the May 8th Board Meeting: Greg Ahrens, Jerry Harris & John Peterson. S4EA athletes Kenyetta Pete (S4EA Athlete Council President) and Matthew Koontz will serve a 1 year term on the S4EA Board of Directors. Thank you to last year's S4EA Athlete Council President on the Board - Tom Alvarez.

The other current S4EA Board of Director members are: Moira Allbritton, Monique Henderson, Joseph Lozano, Steve Martin, David Montanbeau, Jenelle Nettles, Jack Nooren, David Reicks & Angela Yates. Michael Harris & Gary Montoya are stepping down after 2 years.

“A Taste 4 SPORTS” Gala Fundraiser August 1st at San Diego Hall of ChampionsTaste Logo

SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes is hosting our 6th Annual "A Taste 4 SPORTS" gala fundraiser on Thursday, August 1st from 6:00-9:30pm at the San Diego Hall of Champions (2131 Pan American Plaza, SD 92101) in beautiful Balboa Park. S4EA will be honoring Olympic track gold medalist Monique Henderson as our 1st Annual 'SPORTS Woman of the Year'. Reservations are $60 per person.

“A Taste 4 SPORTS” features food from some of San Diego’s best local restaurants, appearances by notable local and sports figures, music by the 'Steph Johnson Trio', a fabulous silent and live auction, and fun. Last year’s event featured food and wine from 20 restaurants, personal chefs, caterers, and wineries. The 2012 “A Taste 4 SPORTS” raised $60,000.

New German Volunteer to Intern for S4EA - Needs Housing

IJGD is sending S4EA a new German volunteer intern - Jan Mensch. He will need housing from the end of August 2013-August 2014 while living in San Diego. If you are interested in hosting our new German intern for 2 or more months during the coming year, contact S4EA at 858-565-7432.

Our German intern this year, Ludwig Karrasch, has been helping in the S4EA office and at practices & meets. He will be here a couple more months before our new intern Jan arrives.

How To Register In S4EA

If you are interested in becoming an athlete in SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes, please call the S4EA Office at 858-565-7432 and we will mail you a Registration Packet. You can also download registration information (Individual Sport, Team Sport) directly from the SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes website at www.s4ea.org. The Registration Fee is $20 per sport (scholarships available). S4EA offers 24 sports: baseball, basketball, bocce, bowling, cross country/downhill skiing, cycling, figure/speed skating, flag football, floor hockey, golf, judo, sailing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track, volleyball, and walking/exercise.

In team sports, teams may be made up of athletes with developmental disabilities, families, friends, and others in the community who want to play on inclusive teams.

SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes (S4EA) is a sports program serving over 1,400 athletes with developmental disabilities ages 5 through adult in San Diego County. Besides San Diego County, S4EA has affiliate programs in Montebello, Temecula, Torrance and Ventura.

S4EA Needs Your Help

SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes is a volunteer-based community-wide program that needs your help:

  • To serve as coach, event organizer, fundraiser, sports official, or other worker.
  • To provide sports facilities, equipment, meals, and other in-kind services.
  • To provide operating funds for the SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes program here in San Diego County. SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization (ID # 20-8886536). Contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law.
  • To donate a vehicle to S4EA, call toll free 877-537-5277 or click here; free pick-up; tax receipt provided; and no smog certificate required.

Volunteers

Volunteers are needed as coaches for the Summer Season in bocce, bowling, cycling, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, and tennis. You do not need any prior experience in the sport or working with persons with developmental disabilities, just a desire to help. Head coaches run the practices, while assistant coaches help the athletes under the direction of the head coach in teaching the athletes various sports skills. Volunteers also act as scorekeepers and timers in team sports league play. Coaches spend 2-3 hours weekly for a 3 month period.
