Guacamole Bowl

2021 Guacamole Bowl

On Wheels

Over the last 17 years the Law Enforcement Challenge -“Guacamole Bowl” has raised over $160,000 of needed operating funds for SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes. During this time, some 20,000 San Diegans have enjoyed sampling guacamole made by nearly 300 competitive teams.

In light of the Pandemic, and keeping with tradition, this year’s event is going mobile. The 2021 Law Enforcement Challenge Guacamole Bowl On Wheels is a drive-thru event on March 6, 2021 from 10am-2pm by the Balboa Park Club  featuring guacamole making kits. Each kit or box includes everything needed to make your own award winning guacamole from the comfort of your own home. Items in each box includes avocados, tomatoes, lemons, onions, cilantro, jalapenos, and a bag of Mission tortilla chips. And, as an added bonus, a Guacamole Recipe Book which includes many past Guacamole Bowl champions. Special thanks to Henry Avocado Corp. for supplying the avocados.

Reminiscing about the 2020 Guacamole Bowl

On Saturday, February 29, 2020  members of Law Enforcement, Champions and the Open Divisions scooped and smashed and chopped and mixed it up at the Balboa Park Club (2144 Pan American Road West, San Diego 92101) to answer the question: "Who Makes The Best Guacamole?"

The 17th annual Guacamole Bowl pitted (excuse the pun) San Diego’s Finest against a variety of teams in a good old fashioned cook-off.

Competing along side the Law Enforcement teams were a Champions Division as well as community teams competed in the Open Division. 20 teams with 175 competitors competed in the divisions.

1st prize not only included the winning team’s name permanently engraved on the highly coveted 'Guacamole Cup' but afforded the winning team bragging rights for a year. Congratulations to the South Bay S4EA team for winning the 2020 'Guacamole Cup'

The Guacamole Bowl is open to Members who are invited to come out and sample all the great guacamole. An $8 admission pays membership fee and gets you a bag of chips and all the guacamole you can eat. You also have the opportunity to vote for your favorite recipe and select the finalists in each division.

You be the Judge!

About the 2020 Guacamole Bowl

SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes is holding the 17th annual Law Enforcement vs. Champions Challenge "Guacamole Bowl" fundraiser on Saturday, February 29, 2020 from 10:00am until 2:00pm at the Balboa Park Club (2144 Pan American Road West, San Diego 92101). The "Guacamole Bowl" is a premier competition designed to determine, "Who makes the best Guacamole?"

Proceeds from the 17th Annual Guacamole Bowl will benefit SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes.

Retired San Diego Police Officer Matt Weathersby came up with this unique fundraising idea as a way of supporting local charities. In recent years the charity has been SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes. Over the sixteen years, the Guacamole Bowl has raised over $168,000 to support local programs for athletes with developmental disabilities.

According to Weathersby, over 2,000 pounds of fresh avocados donated this year by Henry Avocado Corporation are used by the various teams along with lots of onions, tomatoes, cilantro and jalapenos, provided by Jordano’s, to the competing teams. Matt added, "If you like good guacamole, and lots of it, then Balboa Park is the place to be".

Prize Categories

The top 3 teams in each division, decided by popular vote, will remake their recipe for the official judges for the final rounds. Cooking medals will be presented to the top 3 teams in each division. The gold medal winners from each of the four divisions (Law Enforcement, Champions, Open 1 & Open 2) will then compete for the highly coveted "Guacamole Bowl" Trophy.
